BPC-157 is a synthetic peptide of fifteen amino acids, written in single-letter code as GEPPPGKPADDAGLV. The sequence corresponds to a partial fragment of a protein isolated from human gastric juice, described in early reports as body protection compound. The number 157 refers to a fragment designation in that work rather than to molecular mass. Initial descriptions appeared in the early 1990s, when the fragment was reported to protect gastrointestinal tissue in animal models. Commercial material is produced by solid-phase peptide synthesis rather than extracted from biological sources.
Laboratory research on this peptide has examined a wide and heterogeneous set of endpoints, including gastric ulcer models, tendon and ligament injury, wound closure, and intestinal inflammation. Most published findings come from rodent studies, and reported effect sizes are often large relative to controls. Because the compound has been tested across many unrelated injury models, the literature is frequently described as unusually broad for a single peptide. A substantial share of this work originates from a small number of research groups, which matters when assessing how widely results have been reproduced.
Once dissolved, the material is considerably less stable than the dry solid. Aqueous solutions are usually kept cold and used within a short window, and neutral or mildly acidic buffers are preferred over strongly alkaline conditions. Freeze-thaw cycles promote aggregation and loss of material to container surfaces, so dividing a batch into single-use aliquots is standard. Adsorption to plastic and glass can lower the measured concentration, meaning solution strength may need rechecking before an experiment.
Identity and purity are established with complementary methods rather than one test. Reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography separates the main peak from deletion sequences and oxidized variants, and its area percentage is the usual purity figure. Mass spectrometry confirms the expected molecular mass and can flag truncations or modifications that chromatography alone might miss. Amino acid analysis and peptide mapping add sequence-level confirmation, while residual counter-ion and water content are measured separately.
A freeze-dried sample is generally the most stable form and is commonly held at minus twenty degrees Celsius or lower for long-term keeping, with brief transfers at room temperature. The solid is hygroscopic, so vials are warmed to ambient temperature before opening to prevent condensation from degrading the contents. Light exposure and repeated temperature cycling are both avoided in routine handling. Storage over a desiccant is a common laboratory practice that limits moisture uptake during repeated access.

Material of this kind is sold for laboratory research, and labels typically state that it is not intended for human or veterinary use. In many countries it is not an approved medicine, and sports antidoping rules place it among prohibited non-approved substances. Buyers commonly review a certificate of analysis, an independent test report, and the declared storage conditions. Batch-to-batch variation in purity and in counterion content is possible, and how much that variation affects experimental outcomes remains an open question.
Lyophilized peptide is normally kept at minus twenty degrees Celsius or colder, away from light and moisture. Powder held under those conditions is widely treated as stable for long periods, although published stability studies for this exact sequence are sparse and often come from suppliers rather than independent laboratories. Once dissolved, solutions are generally handled cold and used within a short window, because peptide bonds can hydrolyze over time. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles are usually avoided to limit losses, and exact shelf-life figures depend on the buffer and the concentration involved.
Purity is ordinarily reported as a percentage from reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, where the area of the main peak is compared with the total peak area. Identity is confirmed by mass spectrometry, since the measured mass can be checked against the value calculated from the sequence. Some certificates also include amino acid analysis or sequence confirmation by tandem mass spectrometry. A single purity number does not describe the profile of related impurities, so the underlying chromatogram and spectrum usually carry more information than the headline figure.
The main chemical liabilities of this sequence are peptide-bond hydrolysis and possible aspartate-related reactions, since the peptide contains aspartic acid residues but no cysteine, methionine, or tryptophan. Absence of those three residues removes the most common oxidation and disulfide pathways from consideration. Studies of related peptides indicate that aspartate isomerisation and aspartimide formation occur most readily at Asp-Gly and Asp-Ala positions, and open questions remain about how quickly those reactions proceed under ordinary laboratory conditions. Storage guidance typically emphasises cool, dry, dark conditions to slow hydrolysis.
Identity and purity are usually assessed with reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, often paired with mass spectrometry using electrospray or MALDI ionisation. Amino acid analysis and peptide mapping by enzymatic digestion provide additional sequence-level confirmation. Purity is commonly reported as an area percentage from a chromatographic trace, and water content can be measured by Karl Fischer titration. Reported masses may differ by tens of daltons between sources because preparations can contain acetate or trifluoroacetate counterions, and such differences are not by themselves evidence of a different peptide.
Confirmation of identity and purity relies on standard peptide analysis techniques. Reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography separates the peptide from related impurities and serves as the most common purity assay. Mass spectrometry, often coupled to that chromatography step, provides an accurate molecular mass that can be matched against the expected value. Amino acid analysis or sequencing can be added for further confirmation. Because short peptides can be produced by different synthetic routes, laboratories usually report both a chromatographic purity percentage and a mass confirmation rather than a single figure.
BPC-157 is commonly supplied as a lyophilized powder, a freeze-dried solid that is reconstituted before use in laboratory work. As a short peptide, it dissolves readily in water and in aqueous buffer solutions, and stock solutions are typically prepared in water or a mild buffer. The chain contains several proline and acidic residues, which influence how it behaves in solution. Because the solid can take up moisture, weighing and handling are usually performed under low-humidity conditions. Its solubility class is described as freely soluble in water rather than requiring an organic solvent.
Human data are far more limited than animal data. A small number of clinical reports exist, generally with few participants and without the randomization or blinding expected in later-phase trials. No large, independently replicated human trial has appeared in the indexed peer-reviewed literature. Statements about effects in people therefore rest on extrapolation from animal work rather than on direct evidence, and the strength of that extrapolation remains an open question rather than a settled matter.
Proposed mechanisms include interaction with the nitric oxide system, modulation of growth factor signaling, and effects on blood vessel formation. None of these has been established as the primary mode of action, and some proposed pathways rest on indirect measurements. Whether the reported effects depend on a specific receptor has not been determined. Stability in gastric acid, unusual for a peptide of this size, is also reported in animal work, but the reason for it is not firmly established.
A Polish government-in-exile functioned throughout the war, and the Poles contributed to the Allied victory through participation in military campaigns on both the eastern and western fronts. The westward advances of the Soviet Red Army in 1944 and 1945 compelled Nazi Germany's forces to retreat from Poland, which led to the establishment of a satellite communist country, known from 1952 as the Polish People's Republic. The territorial adjustments mandated by the Allies at the end of World War II in 1945 shifted Poland's geographic centre of gravity towards the west, and the re-defined Polish lands largely lost their historic multi-ethnic character. By the late 1980s, the Polish reform movement Solidarity contributed to a peaceful transition from a planned communist economy to capitalism and a liberal parliamentary democracy. This process resulted in the creation of the modern Polish state, the Third Polish Republic, founded in 1989.
Terrebonne (French pronunciation: [tɛʁbɔn]) is a federal electoral district in the Canadian province of Quebec. It was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 1997, when it was dissolved in an electoral redistribution. It was reconstituted as an electoral district beginning with the 2015 election.
=== Discovery of PtdIns(5)P === In 1997, the Cantley lab discovered that the enzymes that had been referred to as type II PIP-kinases, instead of using PtdIns(4)P as a substrate, in fact required PtdIns(5)P as a substrate to produce PtdIns(4,5)P2. Further research demonstrated that PtdIns(5)P is naturally occurring in all eukaryotes. Of the seven naturally occurring phosphoinositides, the existence of four of them (PtdIns(5)P, PtdIns(3)P, PtdIns(3,4)P2, and PtdIns(3,4,5)P3) was discovered by Cantley and colleagues.
[W]e find that the European Communities did not actually proceed to an assessment, within the meaning of Articles 5.1 and 5.2, of the risks arising from the failure of observance of good veterinary practice combined with problems of control of the use of hormones for growth promotion purposes. The absence of such risk assessment, when considered in conjunction with the conclusion actually reached by most, if not all, of the scientific studies relating to the other aspects of risk noted earlier, leads us to the conclusion that no risk assessment that reasonably supports or warrants the import prohibition embodied in the EC Directives was furnished to the Panel. We affirm, therefore, the ultimate conclusions of the Panel that the EC import prohibition is not based on a risk assessment within the meaning of Articles 5.1 and 5.2 of the SPS Agreement and is, therefore, inconsistent with the requirements of Article 5.1.

Erbium is a chemical element; it has symbol Er and atomic number 68. A silvery-white solid metal when artificially isolated, natural erbium is always found in chemical combination with other elements. It is a lanthanide, a rare-earth element, originally found in the gadolinite mine in Ytterby, Sweden, which is the source of the element's name. Erbium's principal uses involve its pink-colored Er3+ ions, which have optical fluorescent properties particularly useful in certain laser applications. Erbium-doped glasses or crystals can be used as optical amplification media, where Er3+ ions are optically pumped at around 980 or 1480 nm and then radiate light at 1530 nm in stimulated emission. This process results in an unusually mechanically simple laser optical amplifier for signals transmitted by fiber optics. The 1550 nm wavelength is especially important for optical communications because standard single mode optical fibers have minimal loss at this particular wavelength. In addition to optical fiber amplifier-lasers, a large variety of medical applications (e.g. dermatology, dentistry) rely on the erbium ion's 2940 nm emission (see Er:YAG laser) when lit at another wavelength, which is highly absorbed in water in tissues, making its effect very superficial. Such shallow tissue deposition of laser energy is helpful in laser surgery, and for the efficient production of steam which produces enamel ablation by common types of dental laser.
Phenylpiracetam, also known as fonturacetam (INNTooltip International nonproprietary name) and sold under the brand names Phenotropil, Actitropil, and Carphedon among others, is a stimulant and nootropic medication used in Russia and certain other Eastern European countries in the treatment of cerebrovascular deficiency, depression, apathy, attention, and memory problems, among other indications. It is also used in Russian cosmonauts to improve physical, mental, and cognitive abilities. The drug is taken by mouth. Side effects of phenylpiracetam include sleep disturbances among others. The mechanism of action of phenylpiracetam was originally unknown. However, it was discovered that (R)-phenylpiracetam is a selective atypical dopamine reuptake inhibitor in 2014. In addition, phenylpiracetam interacts with certain nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. Chemically, phenylpiracetam is a racetam and phenethylamine and is structurally related to piracetam. Phenylpiracetam was first described in 1983 by Bobkov Iu, et al. It was approved for medical use in Russia in 2003. Development of (R)-phenylpiracetam (code name MRZ-9547) in the West as a potential treatment for fatigue related to Parkinson's disease began by 2014. In addition to its medical use, phenylpiracetam is sold online as a nootropic.
=== Aortic insufficiency === Aortic insufficiency (AI) occurs in half to two-thirds of ascending AD, and the diastolic heart murmur of aortic insufficiency is audible in about 32% of proximal dissections. The intensity (loudness) of the murmur depends on the blood pressure and may be inaudible in the event of low blood pressure. Multiple causes exist for AI in the setting of ascending AD. The dissection may dilate the annulus of the aortic valve, preventing the leaflets of the valve from coapting. The dissection may extend into the aortic root and detach the aortic valve leaflets. Alternatively, following an extensive intimal tear, the intimal flap may prolapse into the left ventricular outflow tract, causing intimal intussusception into the aortic valve, thereby preventing proper valve closure.
A complicating factor is that a single ion channel may have multiple internal "gates" that respond to changes in Vm in opposite ways, or at different rates. For example, although raising Vm opens most gates in the voltage-sensitive sodium channel, it also closes the channel's "inactivation gate", albeit more slowly. Hence, when Vm is raised suddenly, the sodium channels open initially, but then close due to the slower inactivation. The voltages and currents of the action potential in all of its phases were modeled accurately by Alan Lloyd Hodgkin and Andrew Huxley in 1952, for which they were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1963. However, their model considers only two types of voltage-sensitive ion channels, and makes several assumptions about them, e.g., that their internal gates open and close independently of one another. In reality, there are many types of ion channels, and they do not always open and close independently.
In prokaryotic cells, such as bacteria, which lack mitochondria, the citric acid cycle reaction sequence is performed in the cytosol with the proton gradient for ATP production being across the cell's surface (plasma membrane) rather than the inner membrane of the mitochondrion. For each pyruvate molecule (from glycolysis), the overall yield of energy-containing compounds from the citric acid cycle is three NADH, one FADH2, and one GTP or ATP.

== Dedicated software == Ion mobility mass spectrometry is a rather recently popularized gas phase ion analysis technique. As such there is not a large software offering to display and analyze ion mobility mass spectrometric data, apart from the software packages that are shipped along with the instruments. ProteoWizard, OpenMS, and msXpertSuite are free software according to the OpenSourceInitiative definition. While ProteoWizard and OpenMS have features to allow spectrum scrutiny, those software packages do not provide combination features. In contrast, msXpertSuite features the ability to combine spectra according to various criteria: retention time, m/z range, drift time range, for example. msXpertSuite thus more closely mimics the software that usually comes bundled with the mass spectrometer.

=== Anti-DFS70 antibodies === Anti-DFS70 antibodies generate a dense fine speckled pattern in indirect immunofluorescence and are found in normals and in various conditions, but are not associated with a systemic autoimmune pathology. Therefore, they can be used to help to rule out such conditions in ANA positive individuals. A significant number of patients are diagnosed as systemic lupus erythematosus or undifferentiated connective tissue disease largely based on a positive ANA. In case no defined autoantibody can be detected (e.g. anti-ENA antibodies), the testing of anti-DFS70 antibodies is recommended to verify the diagnosis. Anti-DFS70 antibody tests are available as CE-marked tests. Until now, no FDA cleared assay is available.
Sheikh Muszaphar later regarded Mahathir as the 'father of Malaysia's space programme.' At UMNO's general assembly in 2002, he announced that he would resign as prime minister, only for supporters to rush to the stage and convince him tearfully to remain. He subsequently fixed his retirement for October 2003, giving him time to ensure an orderly and uncontroversial transition to his anointed successor, Abdullah Badawi. Mahathir simultaneously pledged that he would not take on an elder statesman role after retirement. During his final year in office, Mahathir introduced the teaching of Mathematics and Science in English (PPSMI) in 2003, believing that it is crucial for Malaysians to remain competitive in a fast-changing world. During the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak, Mahathir introduced an RM8 billion stimulus package, contributing to Malaysia's 6.5% economic growth in the third quarter of 2003. The package focused on four main strategies and 90 measures to stimulate economic activity, boost consumption, and encourage investment. On 29 October 2003, the cabinet paid tribute to Mahathir for his invaluable service to the nation as prime minister for the last 22 years. He also received a record-breaking outpouring of public gratitude, marked by a 5.5 km-long banner displaying messages from over 50,000 Malaysians. The following day, Mahathir presented a review of Malaysia's five-year economic plan at Parliament House. Having spent over 22 years in office, Mahathir was the world's longest-serving elected leader when he retired on 31 October 2003.

It is a synthetic fifteen-amino-acid peptide whose sequence matches part of a protein found in human gastric juice. It is made by chemical synthesis, not purified from tissue. The name derives from an early fragment label, not from a molecular weight.
The sequence corresponds to a segment of a naturally occurring gastric protein, so related sequence material exists in the body. The peptide itself as sold and studied is a laboratory-synthesized product. Whether an identical free peptide circulates naturally is not established.
No major regulatory agency has approved it as a medicine for any indication. It appears in research supply channels and, in some jurisdictions, in compounded preparations. Clinical use therefore sits outside standard approved-product pathways, and regulatory status varies by country.
Low temperature slows the chemical reactions, such as oxidation and hydrolysis, that break down a peptide chain. Water and oxygen are the main drivers of degradation, so a cold and dry environment extends usable life. Actual shelf life depends on the batch, the salt form, and the container.
